Why Orchids Matter

This is the story of two well known luxury hotels. In Hotel #1, many things are adorned with a fresh purple orchid. The poolside drinks have an orchid. The room service tray has an orchid, and orchids are placed throughout the hotel.
Hotel #2 does not provide fresh orchids. The amenities are very nice at Hotel #2, but they don’t do anything exceptional to make a more intimate connection with the guests. The staff at Hotel #1 refers to the guests by name and never rushes them in restaurants. Hotel #1 has complimentary water available near the gym, (hopefully imprinted with their logo!) and coffee in the lobby. While Hotel #2 is very nice, with comfortable accommodations, the attention to detail at Hotel #1 makes the guests feel like they have a 'relationship' with the property.
Do your customers feel they have a relationship with you? Do you put a premium on customer service, and mind the small details that make clients feel valued?
