Though written in 1899, the “book” (a small one of only 32 pages) “A Message to Garcia” has as much relevance today as it did more than 100 years ago. The story gets its inspiration from Rowan, the man responsible for delivering a message from President McKinley to General Garcia who was in Cuba with the US troops. McKinley had learned Spain was going to attack the US. The story does not chronicle how Rowan accomplished his goal. Rather, this story celebrates the character of a person who takes full responsibility of the task given to him and does not ask how or why, instead finds his own way and gets the job done.
"When war broke out between Spain and the United States it was very necessary to communicate quickly. General Garcia was somewhere in the mountain vastness of Cuba - no one knew where. No mail nor telegraph message could reach him. President McKinley knew he must secure his cooperation, and quickly. What to do!
Someone said to the President, "There's a fellow by the name of Rowan who WILL find Garcia for you, if anybody can."
Rowan was sent for and given a letter to be delivered to Garcia. How "the fellow by the name of Rowan" took the letter, sealed it up in an oil-skin pouch, strapped it over his heart, in four days landed by night off the coast of Cuba from an open boat, disappeared into the jungle, and in three weeks came out on the other side of the Island, having traversed a hostile country on foot, and delivered his letter to Garcia - are things I have no special desire now to tell in detail.” said the author Elbert Hubbard. The point that I wish to make is this: McKinley gave Rowan a letter to be delivered to Garcia; Rowan took the letter and did not ask, "Where is he at?"
Nor did he ask what to bring, when he should leave, how much would he get paid, or if he would get extra time off - He just got the job done !
Some consider Rowan the real hero of the war. Without dedication to his task and blind faith in his leaders the message may have never reached Garcia.
Read it, share it and ask yourself "Am I a Rowan?". “How can I become more of a “Rowan” at my company?”. “As a manager, how can I surround myself with people that are willing and able to accept responsibility and successfully finish projects?”
And WHAT does this have to do with MARKETING?? Market your BRAND well (hopefully with promotional products) as companies with a recognizable BRAND have more success in keeping and finding Good/Great employees - and THOSE employees help to keep and to get customers.
